Golf in Telluride: Perfection in the Peaks

Golf in Telluride: Perfection in the Peaks
Dubbed the "most beautiful place you will ever tee," the par-70, 6,754-yard Telluride GC opens with a downhill par-4 that is temptingly drivable at altitude, while the back nine ascends into the towering peaks of the San Miguel Range. While the layout meanders through the steep terrain, it also presents challenges that make it a solid test of golf. Towering pines line many emerald-green fairways while natural streams and tranquil water hazards keep golfers alert on the approaches. And as with any mountain course, the elevation changes and altitude are also major factors, so there's no shortage of distance on shots.

There's also no shortage of friendly faces walking around the golf club's grounds – either sporting a Telluride name badge or the logo of a member's upscale golf club on his or her polo shirts. While Telluride GC is a resort course that offers public access, a roster of elite members include high-profile movers and shakers in the business world and A-list celebrities.

Platinum and silver memberships allow participants to make tee times before 10:30 a.m. daily, as well as access to private dining and the driving range, among other exclusivities and amenities. The club not only encompasses golf, but also adventurous skiing and snowboarding, relaxing spa services, world-class fitness facilities and fine dining.

While most members own vacation or second homes in and around Telluride, luxurious lodging accommodations are nearby for those who visit less frequently. Situated either a leisurely stroll or a “golf limo” ride away from the first tee, guests can enjoy The Peaks Resort and Spa, recently obtained by Telluride Ski & Golf. The 168-room resort boasts the largest on-site spa in Colorado, a three-lane lap pool with the only indoor waterslide in Telluride, and the pro shop and 19th hole for the golf club.

Also close the golf club is the Inn at Lost Creek, a boutique hotel U.S. News and World Report named one of the “Best Hotels in the USA”, and the Mountain Lodge Telluride, which offers a variety of lodging choices and amenities such as grocery shopping service and an outdoor deck with heated pool and hot tubs.

All of this is situated in the haute Mountain Village, located just on the other side of the mountain from Telluride. Convenient to a multitude of activities and amenities, guests can also access the Telluride gondola, the area's free public transportation system, for a quick and enjoyable ride into the historic town.

Just as alluring as the views of the snow-capped peaks and the chill in the air is the fact that the celebrities and luminaries can let their hair down without having to worry about constant picture requests, the leering press or unnecessary phone calls. In fact, Telluride will easily make one forget their cell phone at home or in the room, and not fret about it.

Besides the gondola ride from Mountain Village, getting to Telluride typically involves flying into Montrose-Telluride Regional Airport (MTJ) and a short one-hour drive south. Private jets can fly into Telluride Regional Airport (TEX), which was once the highest elevation commercial airport in the United States.

Upon arrival, Telluride's beauty, friendliness and charm take over.
